The Melbourne cup 2016 horses were all exceptional. The Melbourne cup is Australias’ most prestigious thoroughbred horse racing events. With a total distance of 3,200metres a total of 24 thoroughbred horses of three years and older compete. Also known as the richest two mile handicap in the world it truly is a race that stops the nation.

To even qualify for the Melbourne Cup is challenging enough, so one can only assume that the horses are all of exceptional ability. So how does one choose a winner? It all comes down to the calm and steady temperament of the horses to make it first across the line. The following are the Melbourne cup 2016 horses in final field & finishing order.

1st Place – Almandin

Number:17

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy

Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Weight:52kgs

Almandin is a German bred horse. Almandin raced in June with a finish of 6th place over a mile and Moonee Valley. This was his first run in Australia and had a number of starts after that. Possibly the best race was in the G3 Bart Cummings, Almandin won with ease which secured his spot in the Melbourne cup race.

With only 52kgs on his back, he was geared for a great run and sure enough finished with first place.

2nd Place – Heartbreak City

Jockey: Joao Moreira

Trainer: Tony Martin

Weight: 54kgs

Heartbreak City is a French bred horse who prior to the Melbourne Cup had multiple wins at 3200m+ races. He also won his last 3 starts which tipped him to be a favourite for the Melbourne Cup. With the barrier draw he was assigned 23 which make it a little more challenging to win the race.

3rd Place – Hartnell

Number: 6

Jockey: James McDonald

Trainer: John O’Shea

Weight: 56kgs

Hartnell was racing well leading up to the Melbourne Cup and before coming to Melbourne trounced the other horses in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. Finishing in the Cox Plate well he was a tipped favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

4th Place – Qewy

Number: 23

Jockey: Craig Williams

Trainer: Charlie Appleby

Weight: 51.5kgs

Qewy is an English bred horse, brought to Australia without a secure berth in the Melbourne Cup. Qewy had to work hard in the lead up to the cup and did so by winning the 2016 Geelong Cup.

5th Place – Who Shot Thebarman

Number: 7

Jockey: Hugh Bowman

Trainer: Chris Waller

Weight: 56kgs

Who Shot TheBarman is already a Melbourne Cup place maker after finished 3rd behind Protectionist in 2014. Possibly his last chance at winning the Melbourne Cup before his age got the better of him. Finishing 2nd in the Moonee Valley cup, Who Shot TheBarman was showing good form moving into the Cup.

6th  Place – Almoonqith

Number: 9

Jockey: Michael Walker

Trainer: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig

Weight: 54.5kgs

Almoonqith came to Australia last year and after a win runs made his mark. In last years Melbourne Cup he performed lower than expected. He placed 5th in the Caulfield Cup.

7th Place – Beautiful Romance

Number: 16

Jockey: Stephen Baster

Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor

Weight: 52.5kgs

Beautiful Romance is an English bred horse who had not been tested over two miles. She possess the speed and stamina to compete over the Melbourne Cup course but placed 7th overall.

8th Place – Exospheric

Number: 5

Jockey: Damien Oliver

Trainer: L & A Freedman

Weight: 56kgs

Exospheric is a UK bred horse and another son of Beat Hollow. He is a serious galloper and his racing pattern should hold him in good form. As he has never raced more than 2414m it is a bit unsure how he was going to perform in the Melbourne Cup. After finishing 5th in Caulfield he caught the attention of a few tipsters.

9th Place -Pentathlon

Number: 22

Jockey: Mark Du Plessis

Trainer: John Wheeler

Weight: 51.5kgs

A New Zealand bred horse who placed 2nd in the G2 Wellington Cup and 4th in the G1 Auckland Cup. He placed 7th in the G3 Bart Cummings and 3rd in Moonee Valley. Placing 7th in the G3 Lexus Stakes led most to believe he didn’t have what it took to win the Melbourne Cup this year.

10th Place – Big Orange

Number: 1

Jockey: Jamie Spencer

Trainer: Michael Bell

Weight: 57kgs

Big Orange placed 5th in the 2015 Melbourne Cup. Since then he has raced four times taking two wins and two placings. Drawing barrier 7 he was a favourite pick for the 2016 Cup.

11th Place – Grand Marshal

Number: 11

Jockey: Ben Melham

Trainer: Chris Waller

Weight: 54.5kgs

Grand Marshals form leading into this years Melbourne Cup was looking a bit tough. After his race and Moonee Valley he showed good form on the day and his tempo was great. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to secure the win at the Melbourne Cup.

12th Place – Oceanographer

Number: 20

Jockey: Chad Schofield

Trainer: Charlie Appleby

Weight: 52kgs

Oceanographer needed to race to secure his spot in the Melbourne Cup. Placing 3rd in the Geelong Cup he then had to run in the Lexus Stakes which secured his spot in the Melbourne Cup. Tipped as a favourite for the cup but sadly he placed 12th.

13th Place – Bondi Beach

Number: 4

Jockey: Ryan Moore

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Weight: 56kgs

After finishing 16th in last years race he has since matured and shown plenty of ability to take out the race. Finishing 2nd in the English St Leger trainer Aidan decided to give the Melbourne Cup another go.

14th Place – Grey Lion

Number: 19

Jockey: Glen Boss

Trainer: Matt Cumani

Weight: 52kgs

An Irish bred horse whose career began in France. After showing great potential in France he placed 2nd in the G3 Geelong Cup. Interestingly this was Matt Cumanis’ first ever Melbourne Cup runner after only commencing training this year.

15th Place – Jameka

Number: 12

Jockey: Nick Hall

Trainer: Ciaron Maher

Weight: 54.5kgs

Jameaka is one of the best staying mares in Australia. She is built for power and her performances to date show that. She won the G3 Naturalism Stakes as well as the Caulfield Cup which had her tipped as a favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

16th Place – Excess Knowlegde

Number: 15

Jockey: Vlad Duric

Trainer: G Waterhouse & A Bott

Weight: 53.5kgs

This is the second Mebourne Cup Excess Knowledge has raced in. Racing only twice through Autumn and placing 3rd in the G3 Bart Cummings in the Spring.

17th Place – Our Ivanhowe

Number: 2

Jockey: Dwayne Dunn

Trainer: L & A Freedman

Weight: 57kgs

Our Ivanhowe is a German bred horse. He finished 4th in the Caulfield Cup and placed 10th in the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

18th Place – Sir John Hawkwood

Number:14

Jockey: Black Spriggs

Trainer: John P Thompson

Weight: 54kgs

Sir John Hawkwood is an English bred horse who was brought to Australia. He placed 2nd in the G3 Kingston Town and won the Group One Metropolitan. Without placing the Caulfield Cup left people with doubts for taking the win in the Melbourne Cup.

19th Place – Assign

Number: 18

Jockey: Katelyn Mallyon

Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Weight: 52kgs

An Irish bred horse bought to Australia in 2014. His 2016 Autumn campaign with consecutive wins. He also placed runner up in the Harry White Classic as well as a win in the G2 Herbert Power.

20th Place – Gallantec

Number: 10

Jockey: Blake Shinn

Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Weight: 54.5kgs

Gallantec is an Irish bred horse with his six first races in France. Prior to the Melbourne cup he won the G1 Sydney Cup and placed 2nd behind Jameka in the G3 Naturalism Stakes.

21st Place – Secret Number

Number: 21

Jockey: Stephen Baster

Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor

Weight: 52kgs

Secret Number didn’t have to contest a lead-up race to secure a spot which is ideal for him as his performances are best when he his fresh. It has been noted that his stablemate was been comfortably outperforming in training.

22nd Place – Wicklow Brave

Number: 8

Jockey: Frankie Dettori

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Weight: 56kgs

Wicklow Brave is the 8year old son of Beat Hollow. He had already been tipped as a Cup contender after his unexpected win in the Irish St Leger.

23rd Place – Curren Mirotic

Number: 3

Jockey: Tommy Berry

Trainer: Osamu Hirata

Weight: 56.5kgs

The only Japanese horse in this years Melbourne Cup. Curren Mirotic has the form and finished a close runner up at the Tenno Sho, in May.

24th Place – Rose of Virginia

Number: 24

Jockey: Ben E Thompson

Trainer: L & S Hope

Weight: 51kgs

Rose of Virginia is a kiwi bred mare. The 5 year old daughter of Thorn Park. Rose of Virginia finished with a runner-up in the G1 Auckland Cup. Placing 11th in the G3 Lexus Stakes made it hard to believe she would have a strong finish in the Melbourne Cup.

Bottom Line

The Melbourne Cup 2016 Horses were an international bunch and proved a very entertaining race. Almandin, Heartbreak City and Hartnell placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
